Unemployment Checks Problem Exposed By KATU
KATU broke the story that in SALEM Oregon people were being deprived of their un employment checks. Apparently a woman called KATU to complain about here dilemma which, in turn, led to the discovery that the problem was more widespread than was originally thought.

Technology / automation seemed to heavily contribute to the detection of the problem. There were a lot inquiries but the system never apprised anyone of the problem. It seemed to act as a sort o electronic bureaurocracy that filtered any complaints. To the employment department’s credit they acted very swiftly to address the problem. They will be adding additional staff to address the problem. They are asking patience on the part of the people that need services.
I applaud KATU for their part in the whole thing. It is a case where the media helped a great deal. I think this episode begs a larger question and that is the problem of the deployment of technology that is unilateral. Technology that only serves a single point of view and is not really prepared to support the real need. This is a growing problem and this episode is just a tip of the iceberg.
